Gender segregation of the labor market

17.03.2022

Employment of women in Kosovo and gender inequality in the labor market continue to be one of the main challenges, especially as it represents a key factor and chain effect in other elements of gender equality in Kosovo. The economic empowerment of women continues to be one of the main factors in improving the position of women in society. The data presented in this infographic reflect the data of the first quarter of 2021 from the Labor Force Survey, which is the latest statistical report from KAS, and proves a deep gender segregation of the labor market in Kosovo.

The purpose of this infographic is to illustrate the discrimination of women in the labor market, starting from the natural equality of the working age population, breaking down in a pronounced lack of women in the labor force, as well as the discrepancy between activity, employment and unemployment of women and men in Kosovo, as a result of the social mentality and the lack of conditions and support for women and their economic empowerment, the lack of adequate policies and implementation of laws that ensure gender equality.

While unemployment in Kosovo is high at the national level, the discrepancy between inactive men, women, employed and unemployed continues to be alarming and without noticeable improvement. Women are 79% more inactive than men, 62% less employed, and out of 616,023 women of working age in 2021, only 22% are active part of the labor market, while only 15.9% are employed
