Roundtable on the Challenges of Women in Politics and Public Life (Third Meeting)

02.10.2025

The third consultative meeting was held in Prishtina, with the participation of representatives from civil society organizations, the Agency for Gender Equality, representatives from the Ombudsperson Institution, gender advocacy groups, as well as candidates for municipal assemblies.

The discussions focused on gender inequalities present during the local election campaign, with particular emphasis on media coverage and published articles. It was highlighted that posts and
mentions of women candidates are significantly fewer compared to male candidates. In online media, articles featuring women are considerably lower in number, while in televised debates,
83% of participants are men and only 17% are women. Therefore, it was stressed that women’s inclusion in such debates should increase, and more concrete efforts should be made in this direction.

The issue of equal gender representation in the electoral lists of political parties was also raised, emphasizing the need for a 50/50 ratio.

Another important point addressed was the lack of financial support for women candidates, as political parties often fail to allocate dedicated budgetary resources for this purpose. Furthermore, concerns were raised about the insufficient response of internal party structures to hate speech directed against women candidates.
