13.03.2024

The Democracy for Development Institute (D4D), yesterday, held the Tuesday Salon with the topic “Disinformation and misogynistic language towards women in politics: What are the ways to combat this phenomenon in the Municipality of Gjakova”.

Invited for the panel to discuss on this topic were: Eranda Kumnova Baçi, Director of the Directorate of Education in Gjakova, Shqipe Daija Fejza, Councilor of the Municipal Assembly from LVV, Veprore Shehu, Director of the Medica Kosova organization, and Pylljon Nura, Project Manager in the BCC organization.

Meanwhile, this salon was moderated by Ideal Zhaveli, Executive Director at Activism Roots.

During this discussion, it was emphasized that there is reluctance of women to join politics because portals, social networks, and the news that are aimed at them affect their mental health and self-esteem. The panelists emphasized that online attacks against women by women themselves are a negative phenomenon, and in these cases, women are the ones who should support each other and fight the patriarchal mindset in our society.

It has also been mentioned that we have a segment of society who are not aware of the sexual harassment that is done to women and girls. 80% of comments to women and girls are comments about physical appearance. Hate speech has developed and this goes with the development of technology and the development of social media. Changing the mindset is a social process and awareness raising should start from an early age.

This salon is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Kosovo.
