On April 5, the Tuesday Salon was held with the topic: “Data on the status of cases in justice institutions: Transparency and image regulation”
The data which are public show a large discrepancy between the citizens’ impression of the justice system and the impression of court users in Kosovo. Surveys conducted so far have shown that they are satisfied with the work of the justice system, while research data on the general public show that citizens are dissatisfied with the justice system.
To discuss these issues why citizens are not satisfied and to identify other problems in Tuesday’s salon we had invited Fahret Velija, Chairman of the Commission for Court Administration, Faton Jashari, Head of the Legal Aid Division Falas and Nasuf Hasani, President of the Regional Branch in Prishtina of the Kosovo Chamber of Advocates.
Moderation of this salon was realized by Kreshnik Gashi, editor-in-chief of Life in Kosovo. While the editorial of the salon will be written by Kastriot Berisha, legal officer at BIRN.
Fahret Velija, said that the Judicial Council was closed last year and there was no cooperation with the media and there was no opportunity for the public to see what is being done. The Judicial Council has taken some steps and some projects where the Judicial Council is based the most. He has shown that they are oriented towards service improvement policies, working for each case to have a unique case number and each party through the unique number on the website will be able to understand where the case is, how long it will take and this will also help the lawyer Velija has shown that this project is almost at the end of implementation.
While, Faton Jashari from the Agency for Free Legal Aid has stated that the number of cases they have in the agency is very large, within a month he has shown that in the agency on a monthly basis go up to 8 thousand, but that a database where the ability to find them is much easier. He has shown that the citizens are almost not informed about the agency and the services it provides and this is even more difficult for the people who are of the lower class.
While the lawyer, Nasuf Hasani said that a much greater work dynamics has been observed recently, but we have a dissatisfaction of citizens for the continuity of cases and this is unacceptable. In the judicial system, lawyers are excluded from the system. He said that communication would be easier to do through email, which some prosecutors are reluctant to communicate.
