Women entrepreneurs in Gjilan: Facing challenges and opportunities for development

10.07.2024

Only 18% of women in Kosovo own property, a signal that suggests that the majority are not financially independent to start a business. Only a little more than that, 20.8% of women, own a business in Kosovo.

In addition to the financial burden, women entrepreneurs from the Municipality of Gjilan who refuse to engage in the public sphere face prejudice and are stigmatized by society because of the traditional role that women have had in Kosovar society over the years. With one foot in business, and with the other they continue unpaid work at home, taking care of the family.

Often the lack of support from family members and the expectations they have about their role discourages them or prevents women from actively accessing society and does not leave them enough time or resources to enter the labor market.

Also, limited access to finance and capital is considered another major difficulty for women entrepreneurs. Several other challenges women face include the lack of information about financing opportunities, the lack of training on how to be in the world of financing, gender bias among investors, as well as the lack of representation in decision-making positions.

Despite improvements among younger groups, women in Kosovo still present lower levels of education than men. About 50% of working age women have a lower than secondary education level of education.

The employment rate among people with lower education is also low, 30% among men and 5% among women.

In the meantime, the executive, legislature and state bodies must, with all their power, create favorable policies to facilitate women's access to the labor market, as well as support them financially to lighten the burden on their shoulders.

Even the media, as the fourth power, should promote the success stories of Kosovar women entrepreneurs in order for them to be inspired by each other and encouraged to take a step forward towards opening a business. And until the rulers remember about “super-women” we have to support them and enable our girls, women and sisters to be educated, because the change starts with us!
