Why don’t more women run for political office in our country?

04.10.2024

The many social, cultural, and practical difficulties observed by both men and women explain why women are less likely than men to pursue running for political posts. The justifications are followed by percentages illustrating the perceived differences between men (green) and women (purple). Findings from International Republican Institute (IRI) research show that the top 3 reasons why women in Kosovo do not run for political posts are:

Preoccupied with raising children: 64% of women and 62% of men see this as a barrier for women;

Lack of a support network: 61% of women and 54% of men agree that women lack sufficient support networks; and

Lack of support from the political parties they belong to: 55% of women and 54% of men consider this a challenge.
