Women’s impoverishment: Economic empowerment or financial independence of women in Kosovo

09.11.2022

Lack of opportunities, low salary, financial, social and cultural aspects, greater education for women, low access are some of the issues that were discussed today in Tuesday’s Salon with the theme: Women’s impoverishment: Economic empowerment or financial independence.

Invited to discuss this topic were Hykmete Bajrami, MP in the Assembly of Kosovo and Edi Gusia, Chief Executive of the Agency for Gender Equality. This salon was moderated by Natyra Rushiti, who at the same time will write the editorial for this salon.

During this discussion, Edi Gusia, Chief Executive of the Agency for Gender Equality, emphasized that the factor for women’s impoverishment is lack of access in the labor market, where only 21 % of women are active in the labor market. The only investment that is currently made is ICT, however, she pointed out that in 2019 a manual was prepared to prevent gender stereotypes in textbooks.

Meanwhile, Hykmete Bajrami, MP in the Assembly of Kosovo, stated that it will take a long time for women to have access to financial assets, where she highlighted that to this day this is one of the obstacles for their development. On the other hand, social and cultural factors are some of the factors, including low wages and opportunities that are problematic for women’s advancement.

Furthermore, Gusia has noted that there is a high percentage of middle aged women who are less employed and the reason for this is they have not been invested in or worked on with this generation of women.
