Recovery from 2020: How to rebuild the political framework in 2021?

26.11.2020

On November 24, Tuesday’s Salon with the topic: “Recovery from 2020: How to rebuild the political framework in 2021?” was held.  The part of the panel in this Salon were: Hajrulla Çeku, MP, Lëvizja Vetëvendosje; Shkëmb Manaj – MP, Democratic League of Kosovo.

Mrs. Arbëreshë Loxha has made an introduction to the topic of discussion showing that in 2020 is defined by many events in Kosovo, as characterized by the level of pandemic, and in Kosovo has been affected quite a bit by this pandemic crisis, which has become a many year deals for everyone. Kosovo beyond the pandemic is also characterized by a crisis of unprecedented political, constitutional and health. Kosovo is the only country that has a happy government in a pandemic dance, which obviously can not be said to have no negative impact on its citizens, causing fear and uncertainty about how the pandemic period will be administered.

Mr. Hajrulla Çeku started the discussion by emphasizing seven points in order to create a political framework for 2021 which would help Kosovo to successfully face the challenges that characterized 2020. The first point stressed the need for a serious confrontation between the state and all institutions relevant to the pandemic, because despite the news of the creation of a vaccine, in 2021 we will still have problems with this pandemic. The second point is related to the issue of economic recovery, which was not realized in 2020. The third point is the creation of legitimate institutions which will emerge as a result of free and democratic elections. The fourth point includes the fight against corruption and the loss of the integrity of public institutions, as was the case with the state treasury this year. The fifth point is the dialogue with Serbia, which should include conditions and principles. The sixth point speaks about the fact that in 2021 we must be ready to make a radical turn in the environmental issue and the last point is related to urban reform.

Mr. Shkëmb Manaj talked to the panelists and participants about how Kosovo in 2020 had great challenges, challenges which as a state we have not had before. He stressed that today we face the challenge of the pandemic in terms of health, and the economy of the country which has stagnated due to pandemic circumstances. Another challenge for the political system and the state in general are the indictments of the Special Court against the political leaders of Kosovo. Dialogue with Serbia is also one of the challenges that follows Kosovo over the years, but this year was a challenge in itself with the direct engagement of the US administration and the European Union in dialogue, in order to accelerate this process. Mr. Manaj added that these challenges are present and political entities have an obligation to contribute to the assembly and cooperation, to enable the passage of these state challenges.

The moderation of this Salon was realized by Arbëreshë Loxha, Executive Director, GLPS., from which the editorial will be written.
