Providing electricity through renewable energy: How does Kosovo stand?

07.03.2019

The current electricity system in the country is outdated and inadequate – thus causing great challenges to the overall economic growth and development. Therefore, in order to improve the way of life in Kosovo, the supply of affordable energy is needed. However, what has the state of Kosovo done in this regard?

The efficiency of renewable resources has significantly increased. To illustrate by example, every year, in the solar and wind technology, it is estimated that we have about 20 percent higher efficiency. In this regard, Kosovo’s future must be in line with the vision of the world’s countries, and much more needs to be done in harmonizing Kosovo’s legislation with that of the European Union. These were the main points that panelists and participants highlighted during the discussion.

Furthermore, the issue of air pollution was addressed as a contribution to the discussion, where it was stated that in addition to atmospheric conditions and old power plants, another factor of pollution is found to be coal. Therefore, the panelists and the participants generally agreed that during the drafting of the energy policies, we have to take into consideration air pollution and various diseases that consequently come from the use of coal.

The panel consisted of: Gazmend Haxholli, CEO, Jaha Solar; Visar Azemi, Executive Director, Balkan Green Foundation (BGF), and Bedri Dragusha, Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The Salon was moderated by Ermal Imeri, Managing Director, ESCO Power Solution, while the editorial will be written by Nora Jusufi, Researcher, GAP Institute.
