Gender Focus of the Employment and Labor Market Strategy: Shortcomings and Recommendations

14.06.2022

On Tuesday, May 31, the Seminar on Gender Focus of the Employment and Labor Market Strategy: Shortcomings and Recommendations, was held.

In Kosovo, the gender distribution of the labor market is mirrored in nearly every sector of the economy. Women’s participation in the agriculture sector is minimal when compared to men’s participation. Only 5.4% of the 16,000 employees in this sector are women, and only 19.8% are owners of agricultural enterprises. Only 5.4% of women hold Farm Identification Numbers (NIFs), and hence only 4.0% benefit from agricultural subsidies.

Fadil Osmani, the Employment Agency of the Republic of Kosovo, and Ylber Aliu, Head of the Employment and Training Policy Division were invited to discuss this topic in the seminar. Moderated by Judita Krasniqi Hajdari, researcher and project manager at D4D, the editorial was written by Adelina Ahmeti, an investigative journalist at BIRN.

Ylber Aliu of the Employment and Training Policy Division stated that their main focus is on women’s inactivity and that the ministry is working on a strategic document in this regard to improve work performance, with this strategy’s work spanning the next five years.

Whereas, Fadil Osmani has noted that there are 83 thousand unemployed, with another 5,000 youths applying this year. Osmani has demonstrated that they have begun to collaborate with vocational schools to help students access the labor market. He also stated that over 8% of women are currently employed in various fields.

This seminar was held with the support of the Norwegian Embassy in Kosovo.
